The landscape of the Mecklenburg Schweiz and Lake Kummerow Nature Park is characterized by its glacial origin and is considered a true treasure trove of stones. A wide variety of different stones can be found here, which are commonly known as boulders or erratic blocks and are technically known as boulders.
This year's geological excursion of the nature park starts at the old quarry near Blücherhof. There you will find numerous boulders, some of them artistically carved, which bear witness to the traditional craftsmanship of the stone cutters. The tour then leads to the historic fieldstone church in Lütgendorf. This church is an impressive illustration of how the region's abundant boulders were used as building material by previous generations. A particular highlight of the church is the carved baptismal angel from the Baroque period, of which there are only a few examples left in Mecklenburg.
The tour then continues to the Blücherhof open-cast gravel mine, where the gravel, sand and boulders found on the edge of the terminal moraine are extracted. The boulders uncovered there are explained by experts. Andreas Lemcke from Berlin has been invited for this task and will determine the type, origin and formation of the stones. It will be particularly exciting when stones with fossils are discovered.
Notes on the hike:
In order to be allowed to enter the gravel quarry, you are requested to wear a high-visibility vest and bring safety goggles and a hammer so that you can search specifically for fossils.
