Guided Tours by the Michael Succow Foundation

When the first cranes return in late summer and the landscape slowly begins to take on an autumnal character, a particularly exciting time begins in the Karrendorf meadows.
During its public guided tours, the Michael Succow Foundation invites visitors to explore the coastal floodplain marsh near Greifswald on foot.

The tour follows designated paths along the causeway through the vast salt grasslands. With a little luck, you may spot migrating cranes, resting waders and waterfowl, or the first flocks of Nordic migratory birds.

But the tours do more than just show which birds call this area home. Participants also learn why the Karrendorf meadows are so valuable for nature conservation and climate protection. The approximately 350-hectare area is a rare coastal floodplain marsh with natural coastal and floodplain dynamics. Numerous animal and plant species find suitable habitats among the salt marshes, reed beds, and bodies of water. At the same time, the growing salt-willow peat stores carbon.

The guided tours are led by federal volunteers from the Michael Succow Foundation. They begin at 10 a.m. at the parking lot near Groß Karrendorf by the information board and lead to the bridge in front of Koos Island.

Participation is free; donations are welcome. Sturdy, weather-appropriate footwear is recommended.

Guided tours of the Karrendorf meadows take place regularly. Additional dates and information are available on the Michael Succow Foundation’s website.
