Historic Baltic Sea newspapers become canvases: Discover Ranko Strey’s fascinating mixed-media works in “Floating Headlines.” August 3–September 25, 2026, at the Stralsund City Library.
Historical headlines meet colorful underwater worlds: With his exhibition “Floating Headlines,” Stralsund-based artist Ranko Strey will showcase extraordinary mixed-media works at the Stralsund City Library starting August 3, 2026. Through September 25, 2026, old Baltic Sea newspapers will be transformed into canvases for floating fish and maritime scenes. The exhibition is on view in the event basement of the Stralsund City Library and can be visited free of charge during opening hours.
On historic Baltic Sea newspapers from 1955 to 1970, Ranko Strey lets colorful sea creatures swim through the pages of times past. The regional editions from Stralsund, Rügen, and Rostock thus become a unique medium that connects history and the present.
Using acrylic paint, he creates works that tell of his love for the Baltic Sea and its fascinating underwater world. The floating motifs invite viewers to dream between the lines and, for a moment, immerse themselves in the tranquil world of the sea.
Ranko Strey is originally from the Island of Rügen and has been living in Stralsund for about ten years. He pursues painting in his free time with great passion. His first works were already presented last year as part of an exhibition at the Youth Art School. With “Floating Headlines,” he is now exhibiting a larger selection of his works for the first time at the Stralsund City Library.
