Summer Vacation Activity Day Featuring the "Mushroom of the Year" for All Children Ages 6 and Up
It’s fall now, which means it’s mushroom season. Mushrooms are always a fascinating topic—and this time, our holiday activity day will focus on a very special mushroom that probably hardly anyone knows about, which is likely why it was named “Mushroom of the Year.” Its name and appearance alone hint at many secrets.
The name “hedgehog mushroom” comes from the fact that its fruiting body develops white, soft spines that, with a little imagination, actually resemble a hedgehog. This mushroom, which can reach a diameter of over 20 cm, is rarely seen. This is because there are only a few of these mushrooms left, and they occur exclusively in old beech forests. There, it colonizes only dead trees. The mushroom itself breaks down the old wood, thereby providing food for many living creatures and helping to create new, fertile soil. As with the vast majority of mushrooms, only the fruiting body is visible to us. It forms a thick stem on which numerous small, spiny branches grow.
To explore the fascinating, secret world of the hedgehog tooth fungus and its habitat, sign up for our vacation activity day. Space is limited. Please register by 12:00 p.m. the day before by calling 03991 633 680.
