Panel discussion with NEUWOGES Group CEO Frank Benischke at the Neubrandenburg Art Collection
The mass-produced prefabricated panel construction is the defining architectural style of Neubrandenburg, the “City of Four Gates.” What was considered primarily a problem for decades—caught between deconstruction and demolition—is now being viewed in a new light: as an opportunity for climate policy.
This is because the concrete slabs of Neubrandenburg’s large housing estates already contain enormous amounts of “gray energy”—that is, the energy that was once expended on their manufacture and transport. Preserving this energy—rather than tearing down buildings and scrapping concrete slabs—is at the heart of a new way of thinking: the prefabricated slab building as a CO₂ reservoir.
Frank Benischke, managing director of Neubrandenburg Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH (NEUWOGES), provides insights into how energy-efficient renovation and new floor-plan solutions can transform the city’s existing neighborhoods into climate-neutral living spaces—and what steps must be taken today to set the course for this.
Topics to be discussed on the panel will include:
- Energy-efficient renovation of prefabricated apartment buildings—current status and outlook
- Grey energy and carbon footprint: the prefabricated building as a resource
- Floor plans for tomorrow – redesigning existing buildings
- Climate-neutral neighborhood development and social participation
