"What Matters Now: Against Everyday Right-Wing Extremism"
We are living at a tipping point, in dangerous times. It no longer seems certain that democracy is—and should remain—our norm. But nothing has been decided yet. Wolf Iro writes against the right-wing extremism that has become part of everyday life, against the “I don’t want to know anymore” mentality, against the “It’ll all work out in the end (or end in disaster anyway)” attitude, and against premature opportunism and cowardice.
The author precisely analyzes the rise of the far right in politics, culture, the media, and society, and identifies the critical mistakes made in dealing with the AfD and its supporters. And he outlines what must be done—now, immediately, everywhere, by all of us. For, as is well known, it is easier to fight for a democracy as long as it still exists.
Wolf Iro, born in 1970, studied Comparative Literature and Slavic Studies at Cambridge, Oxford, and Moscow. He earned his Ph.D. from LMU Munich with a dissertation on Isaak Babel. Since 2004, he has held various positions in international cultural exchange. He lives and works in Berlin. Also available from Wagenbach: “Coming to Israel.” Iro also writes regularly on this topic in various newspapers.
