The folk festival featuring historical spectacles in the heart of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund
The City Festival with a Rich History
From July 23 to 26, 2026, Stralsund’s historic old town will be transformed into a lively stage for one of the largest and most atmospheric festivals in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: the Wallenstein Days.
This time-honored city festival commemorates Stralsund’s successful defense against General Wallenstein’s troops in 1628. The sounds of bagpipes and drums, the smell of fresh garlic bread, grilled pork, cherry beer, and mead, along with the amazing performances of jugglers, fire-eaters, and acrobats—there’s laughter, dancing, and celebration. Every year, the Wallenstein Days transport visitors from the Old Market to the Hansa Meadow, offering a historical spectacle and a warm atmosphere that takes them back to times long past.
The traditional parade—featuring participants in historical costumes, among other things—on Friday, July 24, at 4:00 p.m., and the eerie Plague Procession on the same day at approximately 10:15 p.m. are undoubtedly among the highlights of the Wallenstein Days. You definitely shouldn’t miss the impressive Baroque fireworks display against the historic backdrop of City Hall on Saturday at 11:00 p.m.
But the Hanseatic city has more to offer than just history during the Wallenstein Days. A colorful row of market stalls stretching from the Old Market all the way down to the harbor invites you to take a leisurely stroll. Cozy beer gardens—some featuring live music—and, for all those seeking fun, the Wallenstein Fair at the harbor: there’s something for everyone here. A festival you won’t want to miss!
