From Tsar Nicholas II to Lenin

Lecture with Thomas Lukow, Berlin / city guide

Two people born at the end of the 19th century had a significant influence on political and social developments in Russia. Tsar Nicholas II and Vladimir Ulyanov, known as Lenin. Both tried to lead the huge Russian Empire, a backward agrarian country, with their style of government. What drove them? To what extent did their origins influence their actions? How did Russia become Soviet Russia and what did it mean for the many millions of people in the successive social systems? What works of Russian realism were created in literature by Chekhov, Tolstoy or Gorky? The speaker would like to shed light on these questions and the epochal upheavals in Russian society in his multimedia lecture.
