A fun-loving joker, a combative democrat, and a pathological alcoholic—perhaps not
the first words that come to mind when thinking of the world-famous Mecklenburg writer Fritz Reuter, since he usually gazes thoughtfully down from various lithographs and monument pedestals as an old, serious man with a bushy beard. Is his fame today based solely on nostalgic reverence, or can we find something in his life and work that still moves us today? After all, following a difficult childhood and years of imprisonment in a fortress, “our Fritzing” rediscovered not only his creativity and zest for life but also his determination to advocate for social justice. Fritz Reuter never lost his sense of humor; rather, he always incorporated the quirks of the Mecklenburg people into his works with a loving eye. Consequently, the musical play by Peter Schanz—who was commissioned by the Fritz Reuter Theater for this anniversary production— above all be a cheerful, cheeky, melodious, and entertaining evening that offers new perspectives on this world-renowned literary figure from Mecklenburg. We are looking forward to this interdisciplinary project with the Junges Staatstheater Parchim and hope to create, together, a theatrical experience for young and old alike that inspires enthusiasm for our Low German literary heritage with youthful vigor.
