Professor Dr. Olaf Hohmann from the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Greifswald will be speaking on the topic.
To err is human! Wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice repeatedly cause a stir in the media and social debate. In particular, the well-known cases of Manfred Genditzki ("bathtub murder"), Hermine Rupp ("poison murder"), Gustl Mollath ("psychiatric placement") and the "ice cellar trial" have shaken confidence in the justice system. In the area of criminal justice, mistakes that are detrimental to the defendants have serious consequences and can potentially destroy their livelihoods. There are many reasons for wrongful convictions. Justice! A retrial makes it possible to correct miscarriages of justice and wrongful convictions. Preparing an application for retrial is time-consuming. Most of those sentenced to prison do not have sufficient financial resources. This is where a project at the University of Greifswald comes in. Under expert guidance, students at the University of Greifswald investigate cases of possible wrongful convictions and support the preparation of resentencing applications.
