An extraordinary find returns to its place of origin - and opens up a fascinating dialog between centuries: a large fragment of a baroque wall covering from the 18th century, long hidden and forgotten, has been rescued and made accessible to the public.
It is on display for the first time in the exhibition "ZEITREISEN. The wall covering and its reverse - "The lost landscape room" in conversation with the artist Juliane Laitzsch , which opens on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 3 pm .

A last-minute rescue Shortly after 1990, an attentive construction worker discovered the precious textile under paper wallpaper in a neighboring building of Plüschow Castle - hidden under the roof, narrowly escaping the rubble. For over thirty years, his descendants carefully stored the piece in a garage near Grevesmühlen before handing it over to the Förderkreis Schloss Plüschow e.V. in the summer of 2023. A quiet, persistent form of responsibility towards cultural heritage.
Restoration, research and mediation went hand in hand in a joint project: under the expert guidance of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation (LAKD), the LAKD and the Mecklenburgische Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow developed a concept that went far beyond mere preservation. The focus was on the conservation of the precious find, its future presentation and new ways of communication - especially for children and young people. The precious fragment was restored by the conservators Susanne Buch (textile conservation) and Annette Seiffert (painting conservation). The project was made possible by funding from the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung and Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Nordwest as well as the project partners' own funds.
A window into the world of the 18th century The fragment shows a magnificent fantasy landscape in which elements of Italian, French and German painting combine to create a unique pictorial space - lush trees, exotic plants, figures in bright robes. Such textile wall coverings once adorned the prestigious rooms of the nobility and bear witness to a cosmopolitan pictorial world that extends far beyond the borders of Mecklenburg. As a unique example of Baroque interior design, the piece is not only an art-historical document, but also a living testimony to the cultural history of our state.
History meets the present After extensive restoration, the fragment has now found its permanent home in the exhibition rooms of the Mecklenburg Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow - and it is precisely this location that makes the find particularly significant. Here, where contemporary artists work, exhibit and create new visual worlds, the historical work enters into a lively dialog with the art of the present. Past and present meet at eye level: the baroque landscape fragment poses questions about our time - about origins, memory and what we want to preserve.
This interplay makes Schloss Plüschow a special place of cultural continuity: a house where history is not frozen in a museum, but can be experienced as a living resource - open and inspiring across generations.
A piece of Mecklenburg for everyone The rediscovered landscape room invites visitors to rediscover Mecklenburg's cultural history - not as a distant past, but as part of an ongoing conversation that we are all involved in.

"Time travel. The textile wall covering and its reverse side"
In her artistic work, the draughtswoman Juliane Laitzsch makes direct reference to the valuable wall covering. She draws attention to its reverse side. Here we find the traces of an eventful history. With her drawing, Juliane Laitzsch explores the references to this history. She zooms into the wallpaper remnants, nail holes and discolorations and remains fragmentary.
Also on display are drawings from the series "Infinity in small scraps". Juliane Laitzsch's work invites you to travel back in time. She always has an eye on new beginnings and moving on. Her meticulous, meditative drawings show beauty and loss in equal measure.
Juliane Laitzsch studied fine art in Bremen and Berlin. Her work deals with the connections between past, present and future. She is interested in shifts, cracks and fractures and our strange disconnectedness with the world. Her work has been widely exhibited and promoted. The University of Art in Linz awarded her a doctorate for her work "Late Antique Textiles - Experiments of Approach". She lives and works in Nordwestmecklenburg.
