Archaeological/historical/natural history hike with archaeologist Dr. Katrin Staude, approx. 5 km, loop trail (approx. 2.5–3 hours) Megalithic tombs and burial mounds, castle ramparts, and ocean views from the chalk coast
This hike, suitable for all ages, takes place in the scenic Jasmund National Park, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the chalk cliffs. It begins at what is likely Rügen’s oldest hillfort: the “Hengst.” It was likely built about 3,000 years ago, right on the cliffs, and is clearly visible today.
Participants will also explore the approximately 5,000-year-old Neolithic megalithic tombs—the oldest structures in northern Germany—as well as Bronze Age burial mounds and mysterious cup-marked stones.
During the hike, chalk, flint, the Ice Age, and artifacts such as axes and blades—which help participants “grasp” history—will also play an important role.
