Comedy by Heinrich von Kleist
Judge Adam arrives at court in the village of Huisum in a battered state and it soon becomes clear that the alleged fall over himself that led to the injuries in the morning has yet to happen - and will be played out in public. Instead of abusing his office to cover up a freshly committed abuse, the judge becomes entangled in an abstruse web of lies in the presence of court councillor Walter and thus puts himself on trial.
In Holle Münster's production, the theater becomes the scene of a sunken world - a world in which the principles of law and justice seem long forgotten. What remains is an order that is governed by the whims of those who place themselves above the law. Adam appears almost like a mythical being who rules over a fragile kingdom - until it slips away from him. Heinrich von Kleist's comedy thus becomes a topical discussion about power, truth and the fragile idea of a just community.
