Music theater by Igor Stravinsky
When Igor Stravinsky plans a new play in Switzerland, cultural resources are (as is so often the case) scarce there. He made a virtue of necessity: instead of a grand opera, he turned to the tradition of the jugglers and traveling theatres that had been touring Europe for centuries. And creates a piece with a unique musical language of Russian folklore, popular music of his time and jazz.
Inspired by old Russian fairy tales, he tells the story of a soldier who meets the devil and trades his violin for riches. But in doing so, he also sells his soul. What does this do to his happiness and love?
The result is a small world theater about love, money and power - and the price the soul has to pay for it.
