This exhibition is dedicated to farmhouses built in the Low German style, without which the cultural landscape of northern Germany would be inconceivable.
"The Low German Hall House in Northwest Mecklenburg" is a special exhibition organized by the Volkskundemuseum Schönberg e.V. to which we cordially invite you! We would like to thank the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the District of Northwest Mecklenburg for their support!
This exhibition makes an enormous and identity-forming contribution to the 500-year history of the Low German hall house in Northwest Mecklenburg.
Archaeologists have been able to prove during excavations that Low German hall houses already existed in West Mecklenburg in the 14th century. German immigrants arrived in the region two centuries earlier and established this type of house.
This special exhibition is dedicated to the development and history of the Low German hall house. It is designed to provide an introduction to farmhouse research in Mecklenburg as well as information on the building and construction of the hall house.
The Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhof open-air complex in Schönberg, with the Schulzenhaus, the barn (both from the first half of the 16th century), the bakehouse and the granary, should not be ignored. The schoolmaster's house and the barn were moved from Bechelsdorf to Schönberg in 1962. The schoolmaster's house with its clear structure was built in 1517 by the Bechelsdorf village schoolmaster Hinrik Oldörp and is still an impressive testimony to its time.
This special exhibition therefore looks back on a long history. This special exhibition provides a detailed overview of the use of space in the Low German hall house in the individual centuries up to the present day. It names and describes the outbuildings of the courtyards in detail. Expressive photographs by the renowned photographer Heiko Preller make it possible to experience it with all the senses.
