A moving panorama of 20th-century history—condensed within the walls of a house on the shore of a lake in the Mark.
Germany 2026, Director & Screenplay: Volker Schlöndorff, 121 min., FSK 12, based on the novel by Jenny Erpenbeck
Starring: Martina Gedeck, Lars Eidinger, Susanne Wolff, Ulrich Matthes, Angela Winkler, and others
A picturesque lakeside property near Berlin becomes the setting for a succession of owners whose fates are closely intertwined with the upheavals of the 20th century. In the 1930s, a Jewish textile manufacturer purchases part of the land but soon sells it again. On the neighboring property, an architect and his wife build a modern house. After the war, he comes into conflict with the conditions in the GDR and flees to the West. The house passes to a writer who survived exile in the Soviet Union. Her granddaughter spends her summers there until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Everyone who comes to this place leaves their mark. But their former happiness and dreams fade. Bonds that were once close are now nothing more than faint memories when they meet again after a long period of silence. And when it comes to painful experiences, the film also captures the silence—much remains unsaid.
Volker Schlöndorff tells the stories of the various residents against the backdrop of profound historical upheavals: from the Weimar Republic through the Nazi era and World War II to the GDR and its demise. With his impressive ensemble cast and intricately woven life stories, Schlöndorff creates a masterpiece of dramatic cinema.
