A traveling exhibition by the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation
The exhibition explores the daily challenges of democracy. It takes a biographical look at Helmut Schmidt as a key figure in contemporary history and connects the historical themes and debates of the Federal Republic from the late 1960s through the 1980s with current challenges. Then as now, the questions remain: What protects democracy? What threatens democracy? How social is democracy? How sustainable is democracy? Accompanying events, such as guided tours, as well as a presentation on the historical connection between the town of Güstrow—known as “Barlachstadt”—and Helmut Schmidt, complement the exhibition.
The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, October 2, at 5:00 p.m. Speakers will include Mayor Sascha Zimmermann and Dr. Meik Woyke, Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of the BKHS. Following the opening remarks, curator Dr. Magnus Koch will lead a tour of the exhibition. Admission is free.
The opening reception is part of the 25th Güstrow Art Night.
