Exhibition by the Rostock District Archives
Starting November 10, the exhibition “Über:Leben – Jewish History in the Rostock District, 1750–1945” will be on view at the district administration office in Güstrow. Interested visitors are cordially invited to explore the eventful history of Jewish life in the region. The exhibition, curated by Diana Paschmann and Dr. Anselm Pell, runs through January 7, 2027.
The exhibition provides insight into 200 years of Jewish life in the Rostock district—from the emergence of small Jewish communities, through their decline as a result of economic changes in the 19th century, to the increasing repression beginning in the 20th century. With the mass extermination of the remaining Jewish residents by the Nazis, Jewish life in the district came to a standstill by 1945. Using archival materials from the district archive, the exhibition traces the tumultuous history of the Jewish population in the rural and small-town surroundings of Rostock—from new beginnings to expulsion, and from marginalization to integration. The exhibition will be on view from November 10, 2026, through January 7, 2027, during the opening hours of the district administration office in Güstrow.
At the opening on November 9 at 5:00 p.m., Dr. Anselm Pell will provide an introduction to the exhibition. Stephan Meyer, First Deputy District Administrator of the Rostock District, will deliver the welcoming remarks. The winners of the 2026 “Banned Music” competition, Lora Vangelova (vocals) and Antonio Cicala (piano), will provide musical accompaniment for the exhibition opening.
