Academic Colloquium on the Legacy of the Dukes of Pomerania
The legacy of the Dukes of Mecklenburg in our state is impossible to overlook. In Schwerin, Ludwigslust, Güstrow, and Mirow, there are restored castles that house permanent exhibitions on the history of these residences. In contrast, the Pomeranian ducal family—known as “the Griffins” after their heraldic animal—is less conspicuous in the region between the Recknitz and Oder rivers. While you don’t need a magnifying glass to find their traces, you do need some background knowledge.
The colloquium on September 11, 2026, will focus on the Western Pomerania region and aims to compile the current state of research while also taking a first step toward networking the existing historical sites in this area. The program includes, on the one hand, presentations (with discussion) by recognized experts and, on the other hand, an excursion to Ludwigsburg Castle, which in 2020 became the first Pomeranian ducal castle to be acquired by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The day will be rounded out with a chamber concert. The event is open to anyone interested, particularly opinion leaders.

The colloquium is part of the “Ludwigsburg 360 Degrees” project, sponsored by the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, which is financially supported by the Vorpommern Regional Planning Association (Regional Budget III), the Fund for Vorpommern and Eastern Mecklenburg, and the cultural funding program of the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal, and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The cooperation partner is the Friends of the Ludwigsburg Castle and Estate Association (Förderverein Schloss- und Gutshofanlage Ludwigsburg e. V.).
