Traveling Exhibition "The Blue Hour in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern": A Pictorial Tribute to Togetherness and the Serene Time of Transition, in Bad Doberan

Traveling Exhibition “The Blue Hour in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” Makes a Stop in Bad Doberan

July 29 through September 20, 2026

With 36 paintings and over 100 participating photographers from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, this exhibition pays a collective tribute to the quiet beauty of the region; here, the Blue Hour becomes a symbol of unity, home, and cultural identity.

As the day slowly draws to a close and the last light bathes the sky in deep shades of blue and gold, that special moment begins—one that has fascinated artists for centuries: the Blue Hour.

With his traveling exhibition of the same name, Marlow-based artist Wolf Herondis (Wolfgang Hube) presents 36 large-format oil paintings at the Rostock District Gallery in Bad Doberan, depicting Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in precisely this unique atmosphere. The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover familiar places and experience the region between the Baltic Sea, the Lake District, and historic old towns from an unusual perspective.

The paintings are based on photographs submitted by residents from all over Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as part of a public call for photos. From over one hundred submissions, an extraordinary art project emerged that not only celebrates the region’s scenic beauty but also highlights the sense of community among its people.

The exhibition combines impressionistic lighting effects with a contemporary visual language. Historic buildings, Hanseatic cities, coastal landscapes, lakes, forests, industrial sites, and the wildlife of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are depicted in the mysterious light of twilight, creating a special atmosphere of tranquility and reflection.

Accompanying the exhibition is the high-quality illustrated book *The Blue Hour in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern—A Pictorial Homage to Togetherness and the Quiet Time of Transition*, which documents the project’s development and provides extensive background information on the individual works.

Following successful stops at the MV-Kunstgalerie am Mammutbaum in Marlow and the Galerie Franzburg, the traveling exhibition is now making a stop in Bad Doberan and continuing its journey through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The goal of the project is to highlight the cultural diversity of the state across all regions and to bring people together through their shared love for their homeland.
