One day...
Following the exhibitions on Inge Jastram and Christin Wilcken in 2024, as well as the exhibition on Kate Diehn-Bitt in 2025, the series “Perceptions of Female Artistic Perspectives in the GDR”—sponsored by the East German Savings Banks Foundation and the OSPA Foundation—will conclude with Susanne Kandt-Horn in 2026.
Active in the Usedom Artists’ Circle, the artist developed her own distinctive artistic style through her powerful, optimistic paintings. Over 150 works have been brought together for the most comprehensive retrospective to date, tracing the artistic career of Eisenach-born Susanne Kandt-Horn (1914–1996). The focus is on a nuanced examination of a female artist’s biography in the GDR, with all its contradictions and adversities. However, the exhibition also addresses contemporary issues, ranging from the female nude to depictions of people from other cultures.
On display are paintings, prints, and tapestries spanning the period from her move to Ückeritz on Usedom in 1954 through to her final works from the 1990s.
With Susanne Kandt-Horn, the Kunsthalle Rostock is spotlighting an artist who worked in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and who shaped and enriched the regional art and cultural landscape along the Baltic Sea. The exhibition is curated by art historian Antje Schunke of the Kunsthalle Rostock.
To accompany the exhibition, the Kunsthalle Rostock is offering a comprehensive outreach and educational program for children, teens, and adults.
