Stepping into the masters’ pool is one of the taboos that Jéssica (Camila Márdila) confidently defies after moving in with her mother Val (Regina Casé) following a 10-year separation.
Val left her daughter behind in the northeastern province. She went to São Paulo alone to work as a maid. In her mother’s absence, Jéssica has blossomed into a self-assured young woman and now wants to study architecture in the metropolis. Thus she encounters her mother, who has deeply internalized the written and unwritten rules of “voluntary” submission and is content in her role as the good spirit of the wealthy and rather dysfunctional Lourenço family. The fact that her daughter immediately begins to shake up the status quo therefore displeases her immensely.
This precisely staged and filmed political comedy is one of our favorite films and comes highly recommended for a cinematic summer evening at the Kulturhaus.
