The Threepenny Opera

Shady characters, corrupt police officers, beggar kings - Jonathan Peachum has built up a thriving empire in London's disreputable Soho district. The shady businessman even cleverly uses the plight of the most wretched of the wretched to his own advantage. But now his business is under threat. His daughter Polly has become engaged to the gangster Macheath, known as Mackie Messer, of all people. His crimes could now draw unwanted attention to Peachum's own machinations and so he plans to get rid of the gangster. With iconic songs and lines that get under your skin, Brecht and Weill created a worldwide success in 1928 with their "opera parody" about people in modern capitalism. Almost a hundred years later, this pointed and amusing social criticism is more relevant than ever. As an interdisciplinary project with musicians from the Mecklenburgische Staatskappelle, with songs such as Mackie Messer's Moritat, Seeräuber-Jenny and the Kanonen-Song, with jazz, blues and a strong ensemble, director Patrick Wengenroth is staging DieDreigroschenoper for the Schweriner Theatersommer im Zelt.
