Lecture and discussion in Stralsund
Much has already been written about the Stasi, the secret police of the SED dictatorship in the GDR. The documents seized during the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90 not only demonstrate the extent of the dictatorial surveillance of its own population. They are also exceptionally detailed sources for local and regional historical research, especially on the GDR era.
In his lecture, the historian and head of the Stasi Records Archive in Rostock, Dr. Volker Höffer, will use the Stasi records to explore the question of how the secret police operated in Stralsund. The lecture ranges from the surveillance of companies such as the Volkswerft shipyard to the persecution of protests on June 17, 1953 and calls to boycott the local elections in 1989, which appeared on houses and bus stops in Stralsund. After the lecture there will be an opportunity for discussion with the audience.
