ABOUT THE FILM
Brendan Fraser plays the hapless actor Phillip Vanderploeg, who is hired in Tokyo by the agency “Rental Family.” His job: to provide acting services as a “rental family member” for lonely or unhappy people. For example, Phillip takes on the roles of a video game buddy, a father, and a journalist. Both funny and thought-provoking, Phillip’s performances take him through the highs and lows of identity; he encounters loneliness and lies, but also discovers a great deal of honesty along the way. As a result, his job has an almost therapeutic effect.
