Your sightseeing flight aboard the world’s largest single-engine biplane begins at Stralsund-Barth Airport on the Baltic Sea. Shortly after takeoff, the Bodstedter Bodden and the Saaler Bodden glide leisurely beneath you. The destination is the wild and romantic Weststrand beach near Ahrenshoop. The flight continues over Born, Wieck, the Darß Primeval Forest, and Prerow to the picturesque town of Barth. There, the view sweeps over the Nordstrand beach, which we follow via Zingst toward Hohe Düne and Pramort. From here, the route curves over the Barther Bodden and Barth back to the Baltic Sea Airport.
The flight is in a genuine Antonov An-2, the model considered the world’s largest single-engine biplane. Development of the An-2 began in 1947 in the former Soviet Union; over 18,000 were built, including in Poland and China, with production continuing in some cases well into the 2000s. It is powered by a Shvetsov radial engine with approximately 1,000 PS, which enables the short takeoff and landing distances typical of biplanes. The aircraft used here, with the registration D-FBAW and serial number 804, originally came from the inventory of the East German Air Force and is now in service under the name Classic-Antonov for sightseeing flights over Berlin, Saxony, Usedom, and the Bodden landscape.
