The Bug Peninsula, located in the far northwest of the Island of Rügen, boasts scenic beauty and, at the same time, looks back on a past that was kept secret for decades and marked by many events. On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., the Stralsund City Library invites you to an author reading with Marten Schmidt. In a presentation titled “Rügen’s Secret Headland—The Classified Bug,” the author takes his audience on a journey through the history of this special place.
For nearly 80 years, the Bug was a restricted military zone. Its history of use spans from the Imperial Fleet through World War I and World War II and the dismantling of the facilities by the Soviet Union to its use by the National People’s Army. Today, the scenic southern tip of the peninsula is part of the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft.
In his reading, Marten Schmidt reveals secrets that still shroud the headland today. He recounts the turbulent decades of the 20th century and offers insights into the history and daily life at this long-isolated site. Special attention is given to unique historical photos and documents that bring the Bug’s past to life.
The event begins on October 21, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Stralsund City Library. Admission is 6 euros. Tickets are available during library hours at the Stralsund City Library and at the box office.
