Bird Songs in Fall for Beginners Hike with Senior Ranger Rüdiger Sitte

In the spring, when birds take up their breeding grounds and the males vie for the females’ attention, the air is filled with birdsong. Now in the fall, however, many of the songbirds set off for their winter quarters in the south several months ago. Only a few hardy species, such as robins, wrens, titmice, and finches, have stayed behind. So even in the fall, it’s not quiet. Although you hear significantly fewer songs now, they are easier to distinguish—especially to the untrained ear. A nature park ranger would like to take you on a hike to experience these songs together. The meeting point is on Saturday, October 17, at 9 a.m. in Basedow at the “Alter Schafstall.”

During the hike through the autumnal landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the birds that have remained here up close and learn to recognize their characteristic calls. The robin, in particular, stands out with its melodic song, while the wren surprises with its powerful, piercing call. The various tit species, such as the great tit and the blue tit, are also present with their lively and sometimes shrill calls. Finches, including the chaffinch and the greenfinch, enrich the soundscape and demonstrate just how diverse the birdlife is, even in the fall.

During the tour, the ranger will share fascinating information about the individual species, explain their lifestyles, and demonstrate how they adapt to the colder season. Participants will also learn how to distinguish between the different songs and how to identify the birds visually. With a little luck, you might also spot other animals active in the autumn forest, such as squirrels foraging for food or deer roaming through the colorful foliage.

The hike is designed for experienced nature observers as well as families and beginners who enjoy consciously observing nature. In addition to listening to the birds, the focus is on sharing the experience of nature together, which provides relaxation and new impressions. A short break with warm drinks can round out the tour as you enjoy the autumnal stillness and soak up the last rays of sunshine.

Please be sure to wear sturdy shoes. The hike will be canceled in case of inclement weather.
