A fable in twelve songs
We opened our theater with this play in September 2017. Every year, we revisit this intelligent and entertaining fable by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe because it is more relevant than ever. As a ruthless egotist, the cunning fox wanders through the animal kingdom and takes whatever he feels like. In the meantime, he has made many enemies and is finally to be tried by the king. But anyone hoping for a fair trial will be disappointed by the verses of the great Goethe, a resourceful connoisseur of human power and machinations. Reineke Fuchs is clever enough to exploit the weaknesses of others to his advantage, no matter how hopeless the situation. Where power begins, morality ends. And so he manages to pull his head out of the noose again and again. With a great love of language and a great deal of biting humor, Goethe has created a timeless work that takes the politics of the powerful to task.
Actress Sylvia Bretschneider plays Reineke Fuchs and more than a dozen other roles in rapid succession.
