Regina B. Apitz tells the story of 14-year-old Emilie, family history, and moral courage. A multifaceted reading about growing up, memory, and empathy.

Once again, the story centers on 14-year-old Emilie, a student from Stralsund, and her journey into adulthood—this time set during the snowless winter of 2019. She is open-minded and ambitious, friends with Nina, in love with Karl, and deeply rooted in her family history. As she searches for her own place in the world, she is confronted with the Schnee family’s past and learns about war, flight, and loss. At school, she must stand up to bullying and exclusion. She becomes increasingly aware that moral courage and empathy can make the world a little better. The multi-layered narrative is accompanied by graphic illustrations by the author.
