Discover unique rooms of art history in the Barlachstadt with Dr. Magdalena Schulz-Ohm.
Dedicated to St. Gertrude of Nivelles, who devoted herself to the poor and the education of women, the Gertrude Chapel has been surrounded by an aura of tranquillity and living history for over 600 years. This special atmosphere later also captivated the sculptor Ernst Barlach. His partner, the sculptor Margarethe Böhmer, founded the world's first Barlach Museum here in 1953, thus preserving his artistic legacy for posterity. What hardly anyone knows is that she had part of the attic converted into an apartment.
Dr. Magdalena Schulz-Ohm will guide you through the attic rooms, which are not open to the public, and tell you about Margarethe Böhmer's extraordinary life between art, devotion and personal fate.
