26th Neubrandenburg Summer Film Festival — In collaboration with the Neubrandenburg Regional Museum
Using poetic imagery, Chloe Zhao adapts the novel of the same name by Maggie O'Farrell, which artfully tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they come to terms with the death of their son.
United Kingdom 2025, Director: Chloe Zhao, Runtime: 125 minutes
Starring: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Joe Alwin, Emily Watson, and others
William Shakespeare is fascinated by Agnes, a woman rooted more in untamed nature than in the conventions of society. Opposites attract. The woman who owns a falcon and can read and interpret both people and nature alike, and the Latin teacher, exasperated by his students, take a liking to one another; he is drawn to her blunt manner and nonconformist nature, while she is drawn to his remarkable perseverance and cultural sophistication. Against all odds—and in defiance of their families—the two become husband and wife; Susanna is born, followed by the twins Judith and Hamnet. Then the plague rages in England. Hamnet dies, and his death threatens to tear the family apart. Mescal’s Shakespeare is a broken man. His suffering, which stops him just short of suicide, flows into great art: into the tragedy “Hamlet.”
