The legendary film classic from 1922 can now be seen with different eyes and heard with different ears. Music award-winning film composer Udo Langer and his partner Markus Spiethaler have taken on the masterpiece by legendary director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Their aim: timeless, touching sounds and melodies to rediscover a cinematic myth.
After the much-acclaimed premiere in autumn 2024, the press spoke of "an electrifying symbiosis", of "symphonic poetry", "monumental-epic" and that this performance completely changed the perspective on the film. "The film illustrates the music, not the other way around." In December 2024, the newly composed music won a German Rock-Pop Award in the "Best Film Music of the Year" category.
"Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror" is one of the timeless masterpieces of the silent film era and film history. The actor Max Schreck's portrayal of the vampire is still unforgotten today - an image that has gone down in film history. Together with Markus Spiethaler, Udo Langer, who has won the prestigious "German Rock & Pop Award" several times, has provided a new perspective on the work. The astonishing thing about it: Murnau's view of his villain Nosferatu gains previously unexperienced facets. For the first time, the letter passages in the film have also been translated so that they can be read.
"There are many more nuances and a latent eroticism," says composer Langer. He and his collaborator Spiethaler have spent a long time studying the character of Nosferatu and have discovered some astonishing things. Is Nosferatu himself a victim? Does he possess a tortured child's soul? Between drama and melodious conciliation with a catchy tune quality, Langer and Spiethaler deepen images that have written film history. Or as Langer says: "The film offers many opportunities for new illumination."
From the very beginning, the duo has pursued musical re-lighting "beyond the sonic boundaries of an orchestra". Between floating synthesizer sounds and percussions, melodious guitar riffs, between sound alienation and sensitive tenderness, the aim is to rediscover the essence of an icon of film history in 2 × 50 minutes with completely newly composed music, live and unique.
