In the mornings, the Ribnitz Library offers various activities for preschool groups and school classes, including storytelling theater and picture book screenings. In the afternoon at 3:00 p.m., there is a storytime for children ages 4–7 at the Damgarten Library.
Germany’s largest read-aloud festival sends a strong message about the importance of reading aloud. With this year’s motto, “I read aloud—do you?” the focus is on the readers participating in National Read-Aloud Day. This is based on an important mechanism highlighted by the findings of the Reading Aloud Monitor: If I am read to as a child, I am more likely to read aloud myself later in life. Those who read aloud therefore have a lasting impact and serve as important role models—for children and other adults alike. This year’s theme is also intended to encourage more people to get involved in this important initiative. The National Education Report has just shown that differences in vocabulary begin to emerge as early as age two. Reading aloud is therefore more than just a fond memory: it supports language development, empowers children, and helps them learn to read later on.

National Read-Aloud Day is a joint initiative of the Deutsche Bahn Foundation, the Reading Foundation, and DIE ZEIT, and has been promoting reading aloud every year on the third Friday in November since 2004. The goal is to inspire children and adults to enjoy reading aloud and to encourage people to volunteer in promoting reading.
