Böll Monday Movie Night & Discussion | Moderator: Susan Schulz (Heinrich Böll Foundation, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania)
How far will people go to stay in power? With the Staatssicherheit, the GDR had a powerful secret police force at its disposal to oppress its own population. Peter Keup, a historian and former victim of Stasi persecution, confronts the blind spots in his family history. His personal journey of coming to terms with the past takes an unexpected turn when he seeks dialogue with Stasi officers. “Spies Among Us” documents these conversations on film for the first time: a rare insight into the inner workings of the GDR’s surveillance state.
A discussion with the historian and protagonist Dr. Peter Keup will follow the screening.
