Twenty-year-old Joachim is unexpectedly accepted into drama school in Munich and moves into his grandparents’ villa. His grandmother Inge, a former actress, and his grandfather Hermann, a retired philosophy professor, lead a daily life there filled with bizarre rituals and copious amounts of alcohol. While Joachim struggles at drama school with his own inhibitions, challenging teachers, and seemingly absurd exercises, he tries to find his identity as a young man caught between the world of theater and the daily life of his eccentric grandparents.
The title of this comedy film, based on Joachim Meyerhoff’s autobiographical novel, is a quote from Goethe’s novel *The Sorrows of Young Werther*.
