Dr. Hans Hartmeyer knows this moor like no other - and shows what you can't see on your own.
Moorland hike
Peat, heath, coastal forest. The Weichselian Ice Age shaped this section of the Baltic Sea coast - and does not immediately reveal its history.
This hike changes that.
We walk through the largest contiguous coastal forest on the German coast, past coastal moors and heathland. In the large Ribnitz moor - a nature reserve right on the coast - sundew grows, bogbean blooms and moor frogs spawn in spring. We see how geology and sustainable forestry intertwine - and what animals, birds and plants reveal about it.
From the migration of peoples to the Christianization by Henry the Lion, this region has never been empty. No place makes climate change more tangible: moors store CO₂, regulate water - and are the first to react.
Two hours. Sturdy shoes, long clothing, mosquito spray recommended.
