“Monika Haeger – Inside the Stasi” is a documentary monodrama that recounts the injustices of the GDR from the perspective of an unofficial collaborator with the State Security. “If you’re on the right side, then everything is justified,” says Monika Haeger (1945–2006), the eponymous protagonist. She sees this as justification even for immoral actions. Betrayal, deception, and lies ensure her success in spying on opposition groups. What fills her with pride as she zealously serves what she sees as a good cause plunges others into misfortune.
Haeger’s monologue is interrupted by audio clips based on interviews with victims of the SED dictatorship. They recount Stasi-orchestrated smear campaigns in their professional and private lives, ranging from home raids to prison sentences.
A few short audio segments relating to the present day illustrate that one’s own convictions, even when driven by good intentions, can lead to the defamation of others. The end does not justify the means—on the contrary: the core of inhumanity remains when one relentlessly enforces one’s stance.
