Marty (Timothée Chalamet) may just be a humble shoe salesman, but that doesn’t stop him from dreaming big. He spends all day fantasizing about becoming the world champion in table tennis. Or rather: He’s already convinced that he’s among the world’s best table tennis players. That’s why he believes it’s only a matter of time before reality catches up. He sees his big break in a tournament, for which Marty flies from New York City to London. But there he is confronted with the harsh reality of the sport, which, as it turns out, requires a bit more than just self-confidence. In the final, he loses to the Japanese player Koto Endo (Koto Kawaguchi). But Marty isn’t ready to admit defeat just yet and starts scraping together the money for the next tournament. This time, he has to win—otherwise, Marty might actually end up stuck in his uncle’s stationery store for the rest of his life...
