The novel "Elizabeth on Rügen" by Elizabeth von Arnim (1866 - 1941) is one of the most famous Rügen travel novels. It describes the "road trip" of a woman traveling alone across Rügen shortly before the turn of the century.
But with its topical themes, it is much more than a travelogue: it is about women's dreams in life, the rediscovery of nature and, of course, love.
Satirically and cleverly, the author observes and describes the Island of Rügen and the people she meets on her journey: Tourists and locals alike.
