The Forum.STADT.Geschichte starts the new year with a lecture. Dr. Wolf Karge will report on what Käthe Kollwitz and Ehm Welk had to do with Schwerin.
The occasion is a folder that the Schwerin "Wirkungsgruppe des Kulturbundes zur demokratischen Erneuerung Deutschlands" presented to "Unserm Ehm Welk" on September 22, 1948. This folder contains prints of "Twenty-one drawings from the late years" by Käthe Kollwitz and a dedication sheet with the names of the Schwerin board.
They were all close companions of Welk during his time in Schwerin. At the same time, they embody the social basis of the people involved in the Kulturbund, mainly from intellectual, bourgeois and humanist circles - an exciting list.
Welk was the first director of the adult education center in Schwerin after 1945 and worked as an honorary member of the Kulturbund. As a bestselling author, he was highly respected and influential in the post-war cultural scene. But he withdrew from cultural politics. The Kollwitz portfolio accompanied him to Bad Doberan and is now in the Ehm Welk House together with the dedication sheet.
