Speaker: Gerhard H. Ehlers, Hönow b. Berlin A lecture on the many facets of the umbrella term "pirates".
"Pirates" - a term that seems simple at first glance, but reveals many facets on closer inspection. This is because the raiders on the world's oceans went by different names, which need to be differentiated and analyzed.
There were pirates who robbed independently, but also those who acted on behalf of kings and princes and attacked foreign ships in order to capture their valuable goods. There were also the so-called "Likedeeler" (equal sharers) in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, who allegedly shared their booty with those in need.
Gerhard H. Ehlers will shed light on this variety of terms in his lecture on April 23 at 16:00 on the traditional ship. He will also talk about famous pirates who have left significant traces in maritime history with their deeds and adventures.
