BINAURAL - The Sound of a Walk
The “KVLAB” of the Rostock Art Association invites you to an interactive sound experiment with Sascha Sauerborn at “Schönfeld.”
What happens when music and frequency interact with our immediate perception? What do we hear—and what do we feel in the process?
On September 25, 2026, the “Schönfeld” in Rostock’s eastern Old Town will be transformed into an acoustic experimental laboratory.
Under the direction of Sascha Sauerborn —a trained drummer, composer, and producer—an experimental concert format will take shape in which the audience doesn’t just listen but becomes a central part of the experimental setup.
Starting at 6:00 p.m., in several sessions and within an intimate small-group atmosphere, guests will encounter various musical and binaural sound constellations. Two musical moods developed specifically for this event encounter different frequency ratios between the left and right ears. At times, the acoustic layers seem to support one another; at other times, they enter into a barely perceptible contradiction.
But which of these do we actually perceive? How does our perception change when frequency ratios shift? And at what point does a physical difference become a subjective experience?
The answers to these questions are provided not by the artist—but by the audience.
After the sound sequences, individual impressions are collected and visualized collectively. Using a deliberately simple analog experimental setup, the participants translate their immediate perceptions into a growing collective result. Only then is it revealed what was actually audible during the experiment.
Thus, “BINAURAL – Spazierklang” moves between concert, experiment, and collaborative exploration: an experiment on sound, perception, and the
question of whether we can actually trust our own ears—and feelings.
Admission is free. Seating is limited per session. Arriving early ensures participation in the experiment.
