Vernissage DIE WELT IRONISCH ERTRAGEN - Klaus Staeck meets Georg Schulz - together with the opening of the Maschinenhaus on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 5 pm
In the 35th year of its existence, the Wiligrad Art Association will find its new home in the engine house on the grounds from March 2026 while the castle's façade and windows are being renovated. Duke Johann Albrecht had it built together with all the other farm buildings in 1895 to supply the entire castle grounds with electricity and heat. The newly renovated, imposing industrial building allows interesting and varied exhibitions to continue to be shown.
The first shows the posters of Klaus Staeck and the wooden sculptures of Georg Schulz.
Klaus Staeck (*1938 in Pulsnitz), who studied law, became known in the 1970s primarily for his biting political satire in the tradition of Heartfield's poster art. From 2006-2015, he was President of the Akademie der Künste for three terms.
"I continue to try to be a disruptor of comfortable conditions. My credo is that nothing is finished. Defending the weak through no fault of their own against the arrogance of the strong, that's what I'm still about." Klaus Staeck: Interview with "Die Tageszeitung" (February 28, 2018)
The Hamburg artist Georg Schulz (*1952 †2025) discovered his passion for carving characters into wood through his work as a cabinetmaker. He collected the observations that later found their way into his sculptures in everyday life. Each individual sculpture astounds with its simple but extremely accurate depiction of human characteristics. Although Georg Schulz works rather roughly, these whimsical figures seem to come alive in all their richness of nuance. And just as good caricature is able to do, they lovingly hold up a mirror to the viewer's weaknesses.
"When I started with the figures, people suddenly started telling me personal things. I felt like a pastor. It was as if they saw something in it that seemed familiar to them"
