For centuries, the workers of the sea have shaped the coastlines of our planet: fishermen, seaweed collectors, lighthouse keepers, crab fishermen, seacoalers and many others. With their work, these people have also shaped the culture of the marine regions. Their experiences have become the subject of countless great novels, epics, poems and paintings.
Global warming, marine pollution and industrial fishing have taken their toll on the workers of the seas. In many places, they can no longer live off their earnings. More and more of them are only doing the work of their ancestors as a sideline and for many men, a life by the sea means hard work in a dystopian port industry.
Over the past 30 years, Rolf Nobel, born in 1950, Professor of Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in Hanover, has accompanied many of these people in their sometimes spectacular and not
harmless work on several continents and is now creating a photographic monument to them with a publication and exhibitions.
