The Klezmerschicksen present a mix of traditional and contemporary klezmer music and songs spanning several centuries. In addition to traditional klezmer music, they perform their own compositions as well as Yiddish and Hebrew songs.
In the 16th century, Jewish musicians—the Klezmorim—created a unique, expressive instrumental style in Eastern Europe, featuring a variety of jubilant and wistful tones full of longing, sorrow, but also humor and a zest for life. In medieval Europe, groups of itinerant Jewish musicians traveled from town to town, playing at Jewish festivals and special occasions, and thus popularized klezmer as festive music.
“Klezmer” refers not only to the musical style but also to the musician who performs this music. A “shikse” is a non-Jewish woman: the maid who cooks on the Sabbath, the neighbor, but also, in some cases, the lover.
Angelika Hykel, Brigitte Ruddigkeit, and Sabine Schmidt have been confirmed enthusiasts of Klezmer music since 1999 and have been performing “concerts of a special kind” (Magdeburger Volksstimme) as DIE KLEZMERSCHICKSEN ever since.
