When little Jampoll visits his grandfather in the countryside during the summer vacation, as he does every year, he finds him changed: He is quiet, locks himself in his room, and writes something down. Jampoll and his friends know that this behavior has something to do with Kohlweis, a stranger who has recently moved there. The children keep an eye on Kohlweis and slowly uncover his secret. Toward the end of the war, as an SS officer, he had sunk a container in Lake Mummelsee. The grandfather, however, had moved this container—together with the mute Gotthold—to the Käuzchenkuhle. Gotthold drowned in the process, which has weighed heavily on the grandfather’s conscience ever since and is the reason for his current silence. The children inform the ABV. They set a trap for Kohlweis. When he and an accomplice attempt to retrieve the container—which holds looted art treasures—the police are there to catch them.
