To mark the 100th anniversary of Joséphine Baker's first performance in Berlin, the Astoria Salon Orchestra is dedicating an evening of music to her.

Joséphine Baker became an overnight sensation in Paris in 1925. With her extraordinary stage presence, her energy, and her unmistakable style, she left an indelible mark on the art and music scenes of the 1920s far beyond France. In 1926, she performed in Berlin for the first time and captivated audiences there as well.

George Gershwin, too, drew inspiration from the spirit of that era: His work *An American in Paris* is still considered a musical portrait of the French capital and its special appeal to American artists.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Joséphine Baker’s first performance in Berlin, the Astoria Salon Orchestra is dedicating an evening to her filled with music, history, and Parisian esprit. The focus is on Baker as an artist, resistance fighter, civil rights activist, and defining cultural figure of the 20th century. In collaboration with Arte, the film “An American in Paris” was created as a tribute to Joséphine Baker and George Gershwin. Excerpts from the film will be shown during the concert. Professional swing dancers will also perform throughout the evening.
