Galerie Burg Klempenow invites you to the opening of the exhibition "VOXXEL & DISC" on April 18 at 3 pm. On display are works by an artist whose path builds a fascinating bridge from the classical sculpting tradition of the Dresden Art Academy to the forefront of generative computer art.
From master student to coder
The artistic career of the artist, who lives in Wandlitz near Berlin, is characterized by a constant evolution of tools. After studying sculpture at the HfBK Dresden (1985-1990) and his time as a master student of Klaus Schwabe, formative stations took him to Stuttgart, Paris (IHEAP) and finally to New York. It was there, at the Institute of Technology, that he began his exploration of computer art in 1992, which was to revolutionize his later work.
After working at the Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin and specializing in multimedia and interaction (Flash/Actionscript), he focused consistently on programming with Processing from 2008 and on p5js since 2020. The result is a symbiosis of a craftsman's understanding of form and algorithmic precision.
The exhibition: "VOXXEL & DISC"
The title of the exhibition describes the field of tension between the three-dimensional mass and the two-dimensional projection of data:
DISC (The Disc): The wall works on display are the result of complex code structures. In circular compositions, colors and lines explode in a dynamic reminiscent of centrifugal force or prismatic refractions of light. Despite their digital origins, these "discs" possess a painterly depth. They are visualized algorithms that draw the viewer into a maelstrom of color and mathematical order.
VOXXEL (The Volume Element): The two-dimensional works are juxtaposed with sculptures that make the concept of the "voxel" (a three-dimensional pixel) physically tangible. This closes the circle to classical sculpture. The sculptures look like digital fragments materialized in our reality. With their oxidized, partly copper or metallic appearance, they look like archaeological finds from a computer-generated future. They play with the contrast between the rigor of the grid and the organic weathering of the surface.
A dialog between disciplines
"VOXXEL & DISC" is more than an exhibition of works; it is evidence of consistent artistic research. How do you translate the infinity of digital space into the haptic world? How much chance does an algorithm allow?
The historic walls of Klempenow Castle provide the ideal resonance space for these ultra-modern works. In a world increasingly characterized by AI and digital abstraction, this exhibition makes the code tangible, visible and - in the truest sense of the word - sculpturally present.
About the artist
After teaching media classes at the HfBK Dresden and decades of international experience, he now lives and works in Wandlitz. His works represent the rare combination of a classical sense of form and technical innovation.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Location: Castle Hall of the Klempenow Castle Gallery
