A petite, elderly lady with a modern appearance, resolute demeanor and strong will: this is how Marianne Farrere, played by Isabelle Huppert, sits at the head of the conference table in front of the all-male members of the supervisory board. She is the heiress of a large cosmetics company. Marianne is a disciplined woman who is caught up in a web of expectations and obligations, wealth and luxury, and in marriage and motherhood, from which her feelings have long since escaped. But then she is confronted by the capricious photographer Pierre-Alain Fantin, who is supposed to stage her for the cover of a fashion magazine. With his overbearing impudence, he dupes her, while at the same time she is fascinated by his exuberant lust for life and bubbling imagination. While her family is horrified, she enjoys being catapulted out of her comfort zone. A relationship develops that bears all the hallmarks of a platonic love story, as the blatantly homosexual Fantin also smuggles his lover into the refined family society. He drives cracks into the rigid mask of restraint and decency until a girlish laugh breaks out at the corner of Marianne's mouth and her eyes sparkle with cheerful exuberance.
